Work | -The 3rdGwajang, YangbanGwajang Malddugi hurls all kinds of scornful, humiliating and bitterly sarcastic words at five incompetent Yangbans who merely adhere to empty formalities and vanity. Malddugi makes a fool of the Yangbans with the help of witty puns. Malddugi showcases his wit and thus exposes the commoners' ill feeling and grievances against the Yangbans (noblemen). - The 5th GwajangHalmi and YeongamGwajang This Gwajang deals with a love triangle between three characters, a Yeongam (elderly man), a Halmi (elderly woman) and a Jedae-gaksi (a concubine). The Gwajang essentially displays the conflicting relationship between the elderly woman and her husband's concubine. Halmi appears at a field playing looking for Yeongam andYeongam also looks for Halmi. They have a pleasant time with each other until Yeongam bringsJedae-gaksi, which causesquarrels. Yeongam asks Halmiabout how three sons are doing. As Halmi says they all have died, Yeongam kicksHalmi in a fit of rage. Yeongamcalls a doctor to take care of her, only to fail. So, he calls a blind man for sutra chanting. After Halmi dies, 5 Korean shamans appear and lead the Halmi's soul to the heaven. The Sangjyeosori (elegy) is sung when moving the coffin. |
